The Difference Between Spiritual Awakening and the Dark Night of the Soul

Hi everyone! Today, I want to talk about two important stages of the spiritual journey that are often confused: spiritual awakening and the dark night of the soul. Although they may seem similar, they have distinct differences that can greatly shape your experience.

Spiritual Awakening Spiritual awakening usually occurs through an external or internal event that triggers an awakening to a new reality—often, a spiritual one. This process typically opens the heart chakra and upper chakras, leading to a deeper sense of spiritual connection, heightened empathy, and the development of psychic gifts. In my personal experience, this stage lasted about three years. It’s a beautiful period where the soul expands, and everything feels more connected to the divine.

The Dark Night of the Soul On the other hand, the dark night of the soul can also be triggered by life events, but this stage involves a much heavier shift. Often, during this period, spiritual practices that once worked may stop having the same effect, leading to feelings of disillusionment or even betrayal by the divine. In reality, this stage calls us to work on the lower chakras—focusing on therapy, inner child work, ancestral healing, and grounding in the physical plane. While it can feel more intense, your spirit team is still with you, but you may need to find new ways to connect with them.

My Personal Journey To give an example from my own experience: My spiritual awakening began with a profound heart opening while I was learning Reiki. I could literally feel a spinning wheel in my heart for months, accompanied by overwhelming love and psychic experiences. Affirmations, meditations, and practices connected to the soul flowed effortlessly during this time. But then, I entered the dark night of the soul. The tools and concepts that once worked for me suddenly lost their power, and I felt lost. However, I asked my spirit team for help, and they guided me to books, people, and situations that provided the healing I needed.

In this phase, the focus shifted to the lower chakras, and connecting to the higher chakras felt ungrounded and uncomfortable. I began working on family tree trauma, learning about boundaries, and integrating new lessons. Over time, the spiritual concepts I’d learned earlier started to make sense again, blending with the new wisdom I was gaining. For example, I initially focused on love and helping others but didn’t know how to set boundaries, which left me drained. Empathy without boundaries can lead to self-destruction, and this was a vital lesson for me.

So to simplify it, think of it as unifying and bringing balance between heaven and earth—the upper and lower chakras, the sun (upper chakras) and the moon (lower chakras). After moving through these stages, you’ll feel more connected, whole, and balanced.

It’s important to note that some people experience the dark night of the soul before their spiritual awakening, or their journey may take a completely different path. Every experience is unique, so if yours doesn’t align with mine, that’s perfectly okay. I wanted to share this because understanding these stages can be helpful for many.

And remember, whether you are in the middle of a spiritual awakening or the dark night of the soul, your spirit team is always with you—always. However, as our frequency shifts, the way they communicate with us may change too.

I hope this brings some clarity and light to anyone reading this. Sending lots of love to you all! 🌟
